Buying Considerations and FAQ's

Should I Use a Specific Motorcycle Carrier, or Can I Get Away With Using an All-Purpose Cargo Basket?

An all-purpose cargo basket can be a great tool to have on the road with you. Some people do choose to use a hitch-mounted cargo carrier on their towing vehicle instead of a dedicated motorcycle carrier. We don’t recommend this, though.

Specialty equipment designed to safely load, unload, and haul your motorcycle is the best way to protect your investment. It’s also the best way to help ensure you travel safely.

What If I Need to Bring Along Two Motorcycles?

If you are RVing in a single vehicle and want to bring along multiple motorcycles, you may want to consider using a dual motorcycle carrier. While we have chosen to focus on single-bike carriers and kayak carriers for Rvers. There are quite a few options for double carriers on the market.

These dual units generally offer side-by-side storage and are similar in structure to those we’ve reviewed here. Dual carriers are frequently rated for at least 600 pounds and some can support up to 1,000 pounds.

If your needs exceed this, you may want to consider a traditional toy hauler instead. This will allow you to load your motorcycles onto a trailer-style unit and travel with them safely inside.

Do I Need Tie Downs?

Tie downs are heavy-duty straps that are used to secure your items in pace. You may also see these referred to as ratchet straps or lashing straps. You’ll find these are frequently made of nylon.

These straps may use different attachment systems, including hooks, loops, or ratchets. Buy straps that are rated appropriately for your needs and always double-check that they are secured tightly and correctly before you set off.

How Is Driving With Motorcycle Carriers on the Back Different to Driving the RV Without a Carrier?

There are some specific challenges you may face when driving with motorcycles on the back of your RV or travel trailer. The first and most obvious (but also frequently forgotten) is that you’ll need to account for the additional length the bikes and carrier add to your vehicle. This is especially true when parking and backing up.

You will find that you’re more likely to forget you have the carrier installed if your bikes aren’t loaded. To avoid this, we always recommend removing the motorcycle carrier when it’s not in use. When your motorcycles are in place, you can expect to see them in your mirrors.

They may move while you’re driving and this can initially be distracting or surprising. Expect that hauling your motorcycles will take a little bit of time to get used to.
